Grooming basics
Shapeaway hair is made of strands, not clay. A groom grows from one object and follows it when you sculpt or move it.
How a groom works
Section titled “How a groom works”- You plant and shape a few dozen guides: long curves you can comb and cut.
- Shapeaway grows thousands of strands between the guides, each taking its shape from the three nearest guides, with variation in clump, curl, frizz, length and colour.
- Roots are scattered by area near the guides, with a soft edge, so a groom fades out naturally at a hairline.
Start a groom
Section titled “Start a groom”- Select the object the hair grows from (a head, a chin).
- Objects › Hair, and add a groom.
- With the Add hair brush, stroke over the area where hair should grow to plant guides.
- Shape them with the hair brushes: Comb, Length, Cut, Clump.
- Set the groom’s density, thickness, clump, curl, frizz and colour in the panel.
How it looks
Section titled “How it looks”Hair is drawn as fine ribbons with two highlights and darker roots, and casts shadows in the realistic view. It thins with distance so far-off grooms stay fast.
- Keep separate grooms for separate jobs: scalp, beard, brows, lashes, stubble. See Beards, brows and stubble.
- Each hair stroke is one undo step, in the same history as your sculpting.
